Time will tell. Leaving Toronto aka The Glorious Chaos as my brother aptly named it, I paused to think of the large, cosmopolitan city  – wild, weird, at times, woolly, but wonderful as well. The Glorious Chaos is actually a suitable description of life. Sadly, those with Autism, like my son, experience Toronto and life itself differently. To him, it’s loud, smelly, bright, and crowded. To him, it’s overwhelming, scary, just generally creepy. But he has to live in the real world – whatever that means these days, so when my son is in a…

My Family moved to Truckee, CA in the mid 1950s right after we returned from Panama.  During our first winter there, we rented a Summer Cabin for the Whole Winter and lived in a small colony of families that couldn’t afford to rent houses.  The Summer Camp Cottages did have fire places and were weather insulated because even in the Summer it can get cold in dem der hills.  Our camp was right at the base of Donner Pass and for fun in the evenings the “campers” would bundle up and walk out to the entrance to the camp and watch the automobiles try to make it up the snowy, icy grade to the summit.  Mostly the idiots driving these cars would end up sliding back down, veering from left to right on the road until the reached the “flat lands” or plowed into a snowbank.  It was great fun for the kids until we got so cold it seemed our ears would fall off even with our caps on.  Therefore I’ve always had a fascination with the pass and the Donner Party.  ~~dru~~

donner-reedparty The Donner Party (sometimes called the Donner-Reed Party) was a group of American pioneers led by George Donner and James F. Reed who set out for California in a wagon train in May 1846. They were delayed by a series of mishaps and mistakes, and spent the winter of 1846–47 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada. Some of the pioneers resorted to cannibalism to survive.

The journey west usually took between four and six months, but the Donner Party was slowed by following a new route called Hastings Cutoff, which crossed Utah‘s Wasatch Mountains and Great Salt Lake Desert. The rugged terrain and difficulties encountered while traveling along the Humboldt River in present-day Nevada resulted in the loss of many cattle and wagons and splits within the group.  Source:  Wikipedia

atlas-cacover

This paperback book measures 9 X 12 inches and is in very good condition for its age.  It shows some usage and wear but there are no pages torn or missing and the covers are only bent at the outer corners.

Written by Warren A. Beck and Ynez D. Haase, it was published by the University of Okalahoma  Press and manufactured in USA.  The copyright date is 1974.

The text itself is 101 pages but it has an extensive reference section and index.  Each chapter has a historical map relating to the subject of the chapters like: Fremont and the Bear Flag Revolt, Mexican Land Grants, Major Navy & Marine installations during World War II, Major Man Made Water Systems, and the Donner Tragedy my last photograph.

Section  #45: The Donner Tragedy states; “The Disaster which befell the Donner Party was the most famous one which happened to any emigrant group en route to California….Once word reached Johnson Ranch (and Sutter’s Fort)…expeditions came through the snow to the aid of the beleaguered group.  However, of the total eighty-sever only forty-eight reached California.”

The Map which details this article shows not only the Northern California Route of that Party but shows the other States were they parties of this wagon train passed through.

This is a fascinating book  and very easy reading because  most of the chapters consist of only two pages ; one page for the map and the other for the text.

“With its great diversity of land forms, California has an unparalleled range of climate, soils and natural vegetation.”  This book contains extensive documentation of the State’s varied history and is a must have for any lover or historian of our Great State
