I am on a baking marathon tonight. I was given a hog jowl at the food pantry today. I thought “what the hell am I going to do with this?” LOL… I am creative but not that creative. I also got 3 lbs of hamburger so all is well. I had made last fall some baked beans from scratch in my crock pot and took a picture of it then and thought I would post the recipe. I had to go back into you tube to watch videos so I could give good instructions on how to do it since it started with dried beans. I was tired from not getting much sleep last night so I was sitting around after the trip to the pantry.
Well, I ran into a Boston Baked Bean video using a bean pot and slow oven roasting. Since I have a brown drip bean pot and at least 15 lbs of dried pinto beans from when the pantry was passing them out each week, I thought I would watch her throw it all together. You start by soaking the beans in water for 12 hours so they can fart. That way you don’t fart later after you eat them. Mine have now been in the water for 12 hours and have not started farting so I am going to boil them for 20 min. with a teaspoon of baking soda to take care of their gas. I will not go into why this happens since I had 4 years of college chemistry and can decipher the ingredients off the sides of food packages. You will just have to trust me on the bean farts.
So after she explains the beans need to soak for 12 hours. the first thing she plops in the bottom of her family’s heirloom New England bean pot is a hog jowl. I kid you not. Talk about karma. She showed the package like mine to the camera and opened it up and tossed it into the empty pot. I paused the video and retrieved the little piggie’s cheek from the freezer to thaw out and put a pound bag of beans in water so they could fart. I got back to the video.
It is cold tonight so I will keep the trailer warm while I bake beans because it takes a long time at least 6 hours. I won’t have to turn the heat on to take the chill off. While they are baking I am going to make cookies also. I have cream cheese pastry dough in the refrig also to make heart shaped hand pies and kolachky( i am too lazy to look up the spelling of this polish word.)
The cookies are going to be made from mini shredded wheat. Meals on Wheels food warehouse must of gotten a trailer full of that cereal because for the last 2 months I have been given a box each time I go. The top of my pantry is like Fibber McGee’s closet with these cereal boxes. That was where my bean pot was so I had to pick up all the boxes that fell on my head. So back to the computer to find recipes to use mini shredded wheat. Post cereal has several good ones. After that I was tired and went to bed. I never did do a post. Maybe on Sunday.
Oh momoe, Hog Jowls and Bean Farts…..Purrfect title for your post. I seriously suggest you just cut and paste this comment and then post the recipe. I am still howling. Sorry you’re lacking sleep and hope all is well. Fibber McGee’s closet…(sniggering) Good night my dear. ~~dru~~
